The Pennebaker Guide

Inspiration for this guide was drawn from the existing body of research on expressive writing as pioneered by Dr. James Pennebaker.

Timeline: Four days

Task: Write continuously about the chosen event or experience for 20 mins/day

What to write about: What are your deepest emotions and innermost thoughts about your chosen emotionally charged experience? Deeply explore the event and how it may have affected you. Perhaps this experience ties back to your childhood, your parents, past relationships, or even your career?

Things to keep in mind: 

  • Find a place where you won't be disturbed

  • Write continuously for 20 minutes

  • Disregard proper spelling and grammar

  • Write only for yourself

  • Write about something personal/important to you

  • Only deal with situation and events you feel equipped to handle
